Angelica Nurseries may enjoy a moderate climate guaranteeing a longer growing season, but our plant selection includes hardy species of enduring beauty for even the harshest environments. We are constantly testing new cultivars both in the field and in landscape plantings to determine whether or not these new innovations will perform to our standards and the zonal expectations of our customer base.
B&B production cycles take from three to twelve years, depending upon crop, soil and climate. Over 80% of our seedlings, rooted cuttings, and grafts come from Angelica's own stock plants.
Tim Kohl and his son, Jim, take great pride in the field preparation and design of the optimum growing environments for each cultivar. "I like to think we grow more than an above ground plant," Tim comments. "Angelica specializes in what is below the ground-the roots. Without a strong, transplantable root system, a plant's adaptability is compromised."
Angelica's root pruning is critical to the development of a dense nutrient and water transportation system enabling the plants to withstand transplanting shock and exhibit resilience as they acclimate to their permanent location. As with any practice that produces a superior product, there are trade-offs. Root pruning lengthens production time by more than 30% over plants that are non-root pruned. Taxus sp may be root pruned as many as four times during a production cycle. Angelica's adherence to stringent standards require the sacrifice of quick turn-over to ensure top quality and vigor on the job.
Working with woody ornamentals and evergreens, both broad-leaved and needle, exercises many techniques in above ground shaping. Attention is given to stake and leader work and regular shearing to produce textbook plant types and forms. Frequently we are advised by our clientele on different regional expectations as to form, i.e. columnar, pyramidal, and we listen.
"Part of customer service and satisfaction is listening to what is needed in the industry," Bernie Kohl, Jr., third generation, points out. "We like to think that we will continue to modify our growing operations to fill more of our customers' needs and requests."
